Lithuanian town ready to restitute to Abramovich property of his ancestry

Administration of the Lithuanian town of Taurage located near Kaliningrad Region, Russia, hope that Russian tycoon, Chukotka Governor Roman Abramovich will visit the town as early as this year. It was found in the archives of the local administration that Abramovich’s ancestors (his grandfather, grandmother and parents) lived in the town before World War Two. In those times they owned vast territories and an estate. Later, Abramovich’s ancestors were exiled to Siberia. The Taurage local government is ready now to return the property that previously belonged to the Abramovich family to the Russian billionaire. As REGNUM was told today at Taurage Town Administration, they expected that Roman Abramovich would visit celebration of the 500^th anniversary of the town planned for June 22-24, but the billionaire will not manage to visit the place, where his ancestors lived, because of busy schedule.

“We did receive an answer from him saying that on June 22-24 Roman Abramovich will not be able to visit us,” Mayor’s Aide Ausrine Norkiene told a REGNUM correspondent. According to her, the response does not contain a certain date of Roman Abramovich’s visit to Lithuania, but the Taurage Town Administration hopes such a visit can take place next year.

Abramovich’s parents and numerous relatives lived in Bazniciu Street in Taurage. One of their houses belonged to Roman’s father Arkady Abramovich, the billionaire’s uncle and aunt, Abram and Leiba, lived in another one. While expecting that the Russian tycoon would visit the town, the administration renovated the street where Abramovich’s ancestors once lived.
