Is footie legend Mara-goner?

FOOTBALL legend Diego Maradona is threatening to commit suicide, it was revealed yesterday.

Maradona, 46, told his parents he wanted to kill himself when they visited him in hospital.

The former Argentina ace is undergoing treatment for acute toxic hepatitis after a two-day bender in which he GUZZLED ten bottles of champagne, CHAIN-SMOKED cigars and GORGED himself on food.

:He is being watched by three guards at a clinic in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires after trying to escape through a window.

Journalist Ernesto Cherquis Bialo — who helped write Maradona’s autobiography — revealed the suicide threat on Argentine TV.

The clinic said in a statement: “Diego Maradona is doing well. His condition has improved in recent days.”

In 2005 he had gastric bypass surgery to control his ballooning weight. He has also been treated for cocaine addiction.

Maradona is regarded as one of the greatest players ever, but is also infamous for his cheating.

He punched the ball past England goalie Peter Shilton during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico — then claimed it was scored by “the hand of God”.

England were knocked out and Argentina went on to win the trophy.

Maradona later came out of retirement to play in the 1994 World Cup, only to be sent home for drug abuse.

His doctor Alfredo Cahe said last night: “I hope the hand of God continues to help Diego.”
